Why pros book La Ventana for the season

Wind window

15-30 knots

Local tourism sources describe November through March as the core wind season, with late-morning and afternoon wind windows on many windy days.

Water temp

Wetsuit common

Winter visitors commonly bring a full wetsuit or spring suit depending on the month, water time, and personal cold tolerance.

Distance to launch

5-min walk

Town launch is straight down the road from our front door. El Sargento (slightly north) is just north of town and often works better for advanced riders depending on conditions.

The lay of the land

La Ventana is a small fishing village turned kite town on the Sea of Cortez side of southern Baja, about 45 minutes by car from La Paz International Airport (LAP). During the core wind season, the El Norte often builds from late morning into the afternoon. The geography is what makes the bay work: desert hills behind town, broad beach access, and Sea of Cortez water in front of you.

The result is a side-onshore wind on flat-to-rolling water, the kind of conditions advanced riders use for big-air sessions and beginners use to build real water time with a school. Conditions still change day by day, so local forecasts matter.

The launches: Playa Central and the main town beach are the easiest places to orient yourself. El Sargento is just north of La Ventana and can be a better fit for advanced riders depending on wind, swell, and crowds.

What you don't get in La Ventana is consistent surf-style wave riding; for that, ask about Pacific-side day trips. What you do get is a strong winter wind culture, schools, rentals, and plenty of travelers planning their days around the forecast.

things kiters ask

Kite FAQ

  • When is the kite season in La Ventana?

Peak El Norte season usually runs November through March. Some local operators describe the wider wind window as mid-October through mid-April, but current forecasts matter more than the calendar.

  • Where are the kite launches?

Playa Central and the main town beach launches are a short walk from the hostel. El Sargento is slightly north and can be a better fit for advanced riders depending on the day.

  • Do you store kite gear?

Ask the team before you arrive and they can point you to the best place for your gear. Please don't lay wet kites on the rooftop deck.

  • Can you recommend kite schools?

We work with several reputable schools in town for IKO-certified lessons (beginner through advanced) and gear rental. Message us a few weeks before your trip and we'll point you to whoever's running good lessons that season.

  • What size kite should I bring?

Most traveling kiters bring a small quiver rather than one kite. Wind strength changes by rider weight and the day, so check the forecast and ask a local school before packing around one size.

  • Wing-foiling?

Yes — wing-foiling uses the same general wind season and many of the same beach areas. Bring your own gear or rent locally.

  • Are there tides to worry about?

For most kiters, the daily wind forecast matters more than the tide. Check current conditions on a wind app or with a local school before each session.
